In the pharmaceutical industry VRBG is a medium used for the detection and enumeration of bile tolerant gram-negative bacteria in non-sterile products. This medium is based on the recommendations of the harmonised method according to EP/USP/JP. The principle of the medium relies on the ability of target bacteria to ferment glucose. Due to the simultaneous presence of crystal violet and bile salts, the medium inhibits Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria. Neutral red is an indicator of the pH. After 24 hours incubation, Target bacteria forms on dishes typical pink-red colonies (Glucose-positive) with a diameter equal to or exceeding 0.5 mm or more, with or without a zone of bile precipitation.SIFIN VRBG is available as dehydrated powder.
