Columbia agar is a rich medium highly suitable for the culture of fastidious bacteria, especially with the addition of blood. This preparation promotes the culture of Grampositive cocci, notably streptococci, including S. pneumoniae and permits detection of hemolytic response (presence or absence of hemolysis). Columbia agar with sheep Blood is included in the ISO10272 as the medium to isolate Campylobacter colonies. The product is available also a base medium in powdered format to be supplemented.
