ISO 11731 norm specifies the procedure for counting legionella in water by cultivation method. BCYE soil is used for the isolation and growth of Legionella from samples of different types. When using dehydrated powdered media, BCYE is formed through a base to which a mixture of growth supplements, that may or may not contain cysteine, is added. The further addition of antibiotics, useful for inhibiting other bacteria that may be present in water and clinical samples, makes BCYE selective. ISO11731 norm mentions BCYE+AB, MWY (Wadosky Yee Medium) and GVPC. The same standard indicates in Appendix J how to choose the media to be used according to the type of water analyzed.
