Trichinellosis is the infection caused by the nematode Trichinella. Although the nematode may be found in a wide variety of animals worldwide, the domestic pig is the primary source of infection in humans in developed nations. According to the European regulations EC No 2075/2005, the gold standard method to detect larvae in infected muscle tissue is based upon enzymatic digestion of pooled samples followed by decantation steps and a microscopic examination of larvae. Trichin-L, a new alternative method to the pooled sample digestion, has been developed recently. The very first steps of the Trichin-L test are similar to those of the pooled sample digestion. It then differs on both decantation steps replaced by a larvae filtration step and the final detection step which consists of a latex agglutination test. It allows checking for the presence or absence of Trichinella antigens.
