Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative micro-organism which grows on selective media containing cetrimide and produces pyocianin, a blue-green pigment. It exhibits oxidative metabolism and reduces nitrate beyond the stage of nitrite. When grown in this medium for the confirmation of colonies isolated on CN agar or other selective media, Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces ammonia from the breakdown of acetamide. Ammonia production can be detected by adding 1 to 2 drops of Nessler reagent and examining the tubes: positives are characterized by the production of a color varying from yellow to brick-red depending upon concentration. This method is included in ISO16266 (Water quality Detection and enumeration of Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Method by membrane filtration)
